You cannot pour from an empty cup

Family caregivers in Milwaukee are doing full-time work on top of their own jobs, children, and health appointments. Respite care exists because that pace is not survivable without breaks — and because a rested caregiver provides better care.

Avida sends a trained caregiver into the home to take over the routine you've built. Meals, medication reminders, bathing, transfers and company all continue. You leave, and things stay the same.

Respite can be a standing Tuesday afternoon, a Saturday every month, or a full week while you travel. For families enrolled in Family Care, Partnership or IRIS, respite is typically a covered benefit; otherwise it is available privately by the hour.

Ways Milwaukee families use respite

A standing weekly break

One reliable block each week to run errands, work a shift, or simply sleep.

Vacation coverage

Several days in a row so you can actually leave town without worrying.

Your own medical care

Coverage while you have surgery, recover, or attend your own appointments.

Family events

Weddings, funerals, school events — the things caregiving keeps you from.

Trained, screened caregivers

Background checks, training, and a written plan so nothing is guessed at.

Covered or private pay

Often included in Family Care, Partnership and IRIS; otherwise billed by the hour.

Signs a caregiver needs respite now

Burnout rarely announces itself. These are the early signals.

  • You cannot remember the last full night of sleep
  • You've skipped your own doctor or dentist appointments
  • You feel resentful or short-tempered and then guilty about it
  • Work, marriage, or your own children are being squeezed out
  • You've stopped seeing friends entirely
  • You're the only person who knows the whole routine

Respite care questions from Milwaukee caregivers

What is respite care?+

Respite care is short-term relief for a family caregiver. A trained caregiver takes over the daily routine — a few hours, a full day, or several days in a row — so the family member can rest, work, travel, or handle their own health.

Does Wisconsin Medicaid cover respite care?+

Yes. Family Care, Partnership and IRIS all include respite as a benefit for enrolled members, and IRIS participants can direct part of their budget toward it. The ADRC can explain what your plan allows, and we can help you ask the right question.

How much respite can we get?+

It depends on the program and the care plan. Some families use a regular weekly block so the caregiver always has one reliable afternoon; others save hours for a vacation or a medical procedure. Both work.

Can we book respite for just one weekend?+

Yes. We schedule one-off weekends and short blocks as well as ongoing weekly relief. If Medicaid hours aren't available, respite can be arranged privately by the hour.

Will the same caregiver come each time?+

We aim for consistency, especially where memory loss makes new faces upsetting. For ongoing respite you'll usually have one primary caregiver and one backup who has met your loved one.

What if my parent refuses outside help?+

It is the most common hurdle we see. We often start with a short 'visit' rather than a care shift, keep the same caregiver, and let trust build. Our coordinators can suggest wording that has worked for other Milwaukee families.
