FAQ

Frequently asked questions about family support

What is family and household support?+

It is a set of services designed to keep the whole family supported while a loved one ages or lives with a disability at home. This includes planned respite breaks for family caregivers, free training on safe caregiving skills, bilingual care coordination, and help navigating Medicaid and clinic communication.

Who qualifies for planned respite?+

Planned respite is available to family caregivers who need scheduled relief so they can rest, work, or manage other responsibilities. The person receiving care must be eligible for in-home services through a Wisconsin Medicaid program or private pay. Call us and we will review your situation.

Is the family caregiver training really free?+

Yes. Avida offers free family caregiver training sessions covering safe transfers, medication management, and advocacy. Sessions are open to family members and informal caregivers supporting a loved one at home in Wisconsin.

Do you coordinate with my MCO or IRIS consultant?+

Yes. Our care coordinators work directly with your Managed Care Organization (MCO), IRIS consultant, clinic, or other providers to align your loved one's care plan, schedule, and any changes in needs.

Do you provide bilingual care?+

Yes. Avida offers bilingual English and Spanish care coordination and caregiver matching when requested, so families can communicate comfortably in the language they prefer.

Which Medicaid programs cover respite and family support in Wisconsin?+

Family and household support services are typically funded through Wisconsin Medicaid long-term care programs such as Family Care, Family Care Partnership, and IRIS (Include, Respect, I Self-Direct). Eligibility is determined by your county's Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC). Private pay options are also available if you are not enrolled in a Medicaid program or want to supplement covered hours.

How do I get started if my loved one is already enrolled in Family Care or IRIS?+

If your loved one is enrolled, contact your MCO care manager or IRIS consultant and request Avida Personal Care as your provider. Then reach out to us directly — we coordinate with your MCO or IRIS consultant to set up the service plan, schedule, and caregiver match. You can also use the request form on this page and we will follow up within one business day.

What areas do you serve?+

Avida Personal Care serves families across southeastern Wisconsin, including Milwaukee County, Waukesha County, and Racine County, and can discuss service in surrounding areas. Call (414) 348-4600 or submit the care coordination request form to confirm availability in your neighborhood.

How much respite care can a family caregiver receive?+

Respite hours depend on your loved one's care plan and the program that funds their services. Some families schedule a few hours a week of relief; others arrange longer planned breaks. Your MCO care manager or IRIS consultant determines authorized hours, and our coordinators help you use them in a way that fits your family's routine.

Can I switch to Avida if I already have a caregiver from another agency?+

Yes. You have the right to choose your provider. Tell your MCO care manager or IRIS consultant that you'd like to move services to Avida Personal Care, and we will handle the transition details with them so your loved one's care is not interrupted.

What if we're not sure what kind of help we need?+

That's very common. Call us or submit the care coordination request form, and a coordinator will talk through your family's situation — daily routines, safety concerns, caregiver stress, and household tasks — and recommend the mix of respite, personal care, chore services, and training that fits best.
